Dental Health is a Primary Concern for the 50+ Generation

A new study among over 500 respondents aged 48 and over has found that dental health is the third most important medical concern among this population. Although 75 percent of the participants rated their dental health care as very important compared with their overall health concerns, a considerable number did not realize the importance of oral health.

The study was conducted by nonprofit organization AARP, the American Association of Retired Persons, in order to better understand the attitudes of people over the age of 50 towards oral health. AARP is aimed at supporting people aged 50 and over through information, advocacy and service.

By analyzing the responses to a questionnaire of 25 questions on oral care, the investigators found that older adults are generally aware of the importance of maintaining good oral health. Almost 75 percent said that they know that aging may affect their oral health. This group reported that for this reason they visit a dentist at least twice a year.

However, the survey found that many of the participants did not maintain a complete daily oral care routine. According to the survey, 60 percent did not use a mouthwash and 47 percent did not floss. Almost 35 percent only brushed once a day.

The investigators emphasized that maintaining a rigorous oral hygiene regimen is critical as adults age. People over 50 should be using products that address their specific dental needs and undergo regular professional dental cleaning, they recommended.
